What are Inlays and Onlays?

Also known as partial crowns, inlays and onlays are a conservative treatment that work to restore and strengthen your teeth without removing any more of your tooth structure than is necessary. Inlays and onlays are typically recommended when teeth need more attention than a simple filling but do not require a full dental crown.

Dental inlays and onlays are designed to provide you with a functional and beautiful result. They are custom-made to fit your tooth perfectly and may be created from a variety of materials, including porcelain, composite resin or gold. Once placed, inlays and onlays are virtually undetectable in the mouth and actively work to preserve your natural tooth structure.The difference between inlays and onlays is simple.

Dental inlays are used when the damage to your tooth does not reach the cusps, or pointed tips, on the chewing surface of the tooth. A dental onlay will be used when the damage extends to one or more of the cusps. Dr. Macedo will determine whether you need an inlay or an onlay when you visit our office for your appointment.
